One Man Island eBook Thomas J Wolfenden

One Man's Island is a novel which starts with Tim having a bad day, then it gets worse with the death of nearly every person on the planet. The first third of the book deals with his survival and struggles as possibly the last human being on the planet. The latter half of the book chronicles his increasing awareness the survivors of the world aren't necessarily decent people. Tim is a believable hero, both exceptionally tough and flawed in numerous ways. Getting in his head is interesting enough to entertain the readers for the many periods when he's alone.

A warning, One Man's Island deals with quite a bit of dark subject matter. There is torture, alluded to sexual assault (nothing on-camera), and acts of shocking violence. Nothing which isn't in quite a few "hard men, making hard decisions" style fiction but which might put off some readers. Otherwise, it's a good mixture of an adventure tale and post-apocalyptic horror.

One Man Island eBook Thomas J Wolfenden Reviews

I love post apocalyptic novels and this one is first rate. It's not all doom and gloom. It has humor, fun and love without getting sappy. Sure there are unexplained events, which would be true in the real world, and there Is a little mysticism but it only adds to the background. I would have made the ending chapter a little different but it still works out fine. The characters are believable and most likeable and the main villain is understandable and truly a nut job. The references to the Caine Mutiny really come to life. Without a doubt you cheer for Robyn throughout while rooting for Tim and Holly. As they say, "all is well that ends well". This is a book well worth reading and truth be told it would make a great movie.
I thought this book was quite an enjoyable read. This is the authors first novel and in comparison to other PAW first time authors, he does a good job keeping the readers interest. While there are not a lot of characters in this book, their development seems well thought out.

The story is a little unrealistic in some parts but I do not believe the author was trying to write a technically accurate PAW novel. I cannot subtract a star for that and it in fact made the story more readable.

There are some 1 star reviews here stating that there are a lot of editing issues with this book. Since I have just finished reading this book, it was mentioned in the foreword that the author had worked on fixing most of the errors. Pretty admirable considering a lot of new authors never follow up with editing after it is released. There are still some errors but for me they did not take away anything from the story.
Wolfenden is a gifted storyteller who has great potential as a novelist. The story line is intriguing, characters are adequately developed, and the dialogue flows naturally enough. There are long portions of nothing but dialogue which could be improved, but overall, for story alone, I would give this a five star rating despite the annoying structural problems and the improbable coincidences that involve people that knew each other earlier meeting halfway around the globe in a world in which 99.99999999% of the population is dead..
I have to take off at least one star, however, for editing and scientific accuracy. It's not written in stone, but one rule that should be followed is to start a new paragraph when a second character begins to speak. I had to read something two or three times on occasion to figure out which character was saying what. As to scientific accuracy, it was never explained how almost everyone dies and some survive with nothing more than a sunburn. At least an off-the-wall theory. And how does one survive a 20 kiloton nuke only 3 miles from ground zero?
Overall, though, I liked the book and will probably buy the second installment even though it is above my threshold for Books at six bucks.
EMP books, like Zombie books, are a genre alone. Readers of the type know this. Others have no idea. This book is one of the better in the genre. Its got action. Its got character development and its got military lingo galore. Its a man's book. No doubt about that -- and I like it. If you want a strong female lead go somewhere else. This book is for the man cave. If you want to know how it would probably go down in an EMP event this book gives the reader a pretty good idea what would probably happen -- and it isn't pretty for the fairer sex. There are good people. There are bad people. And there is sorrow enough between the two. Wolfenden does a good job of exploring that gulf. And he suggests a greater guiding hand in the affairs of men. While not fully developed I am hoping he delves into it further in the second in the series. If you like survivalist action packed adventure--this is your book. Two Thumbs Up!
As another reviewer wrote, this is definitely a guy's book - and while I'm not a guy, I think like one and enjoy reading fiction based on reality, not feelings. So anyone looking for chick lit and lots of emoting and over analyzing every thought and action should read something else. This is an excellent dystopian fiction book and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Yeah, there were some grammar/syntax issues, but nothing nearly as serious as other books I've read. Yes, the main character starts off as a bit of a stereotype (the plural of anecdote is data, and stereotypes are based on real people NOTICING THINGS) but he develops nicely as the book continues. This is not a prepper book, because the catastrophe (an exploding star that kills almost everyone on earth with gamma rays) is utterly unexpected, but there's still enough detail about how character Tim manages (and his military training is a big part of that). My one real complaint is the why/how of the few who survive do is never actually explained. Either way, there are some unexpected twists and turns and a very satisfying ending. The bad guys die and the good guys survive. Now I'm going to settle down to read book II, and then others by the same author. I'll take enjoyable fiction where the good guys win (even if there's an unnecessary push for American diversity is our strength crap in it) over today's reality (diversity + proximity = war).
